Erection Problems-causes and treatment

Erection Problems or Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is popularly called ‘Impotence’. Now, I am sure you have heard that word many times while watching a Nollywood film. Erectile Dysfunction actually means that the man has either one or more of the following five symptoms:

  1. He is unable to have an erection
  2. He is unable to keep his erection
  3. He has reduced sexual desire
  4. He has premature ejaculation (he comes in one minute or less)
  5. He has delayed ejaculation (takes too long or cannot come at all)

So how does your body help men have a normal erection?

There are many processes involved in achieving and sustaining an erection, and getting the right amount of pleasure from sex. These processes involve the nervous system, male hormones, and good blood supply to the penis. Thus, any abnormality in any one of these body systems could have a significant impact on your erection.

But what causes this weak or abnormal erection?

The causes could either be physical or psychological or sometimes both. For example, a  minor physical condition such as an accident that slows down your sexual response (physical), can in turn lead to anxiety (psychological) which then worsens it. In some cases, the reason is lifestyle-related.

How can you know if you have erection problems?

Although there are really no formal tests to diagnose erectile dysfunction, but based on your communication with your doctor, some tests can then be carried out to exclude other diseases being the cause.

Examples of  Laboratory tests to be carried out to exclude diseases include:

  • Blood sugar test
  • Cholesterol level test
  • Liver function test
  • Hormone profile (testosterone level, luteinizing hormone levels, thyroid-stimulating hormone, prolactin level).
  • A transrectal ultrasound scan to evaluate the prostate and pelvis
  • Duplex ultrasound scan and magnetic resonance angiography: to evaluate blood flow to the penis.

Is there treatment or have you entered one chance?

The easiest solution for men with premature ejaculation that is not caused by other health issues or diseases is to reduce penis sensitivity. This can be achieved using erection-delay condoms (call us on 08094477226 to order delay condoms). These condoms contain delay gels and would give you a very quick solution.

Now if sensitivity reduction does not solve your problem, don’t worry, there are six other possible ways to overcome erectile dysfunction:

1. Lifestyle modifications including exercise, quitting smoking, weight loss (if obese), and cutting down on alcohol intake.

2. Psychosocial counseling (preferably with your partner)

3. Medicine review with your health provider if you are currently being managed for another medical condition. You might have to wait until your other condition is better before you can overcome your erection problem

5. Use of medicines that are actually designed for treating erectile dysfunction. Please note that these medicines should be used only on a doctors’ prescription

6. Hormone replacement therapy for men with hypogonadism and prolactinoma.

Word of advice for anyone with erection problems:

  • There are all sorts of herbal remedies in the market but these herbs should be used with extreme caution. This is because most of them have not been thoroughly researched to fully understand their side effects. Furthermore, while some may give you the erection you desire, they are also known to cause liver or kidney damage or they may affect some other organs. This will just worsen the problem and can eventually kill you.
  • If you have decided to use herbal remedies please ensure they are at least NAFDAC approved.
  • Erectile dysfunction can be a very disturbing condition for men, but it is a condition that can be treated or managed.
  • It starts with being totally open to your doctor, especially about your medical, social, and sexual health history. This way, the right management plan can be made and you can go back to becoming the stud that you used to be.
